This was one of my favorite lines from a recent conversation with a group of friends from around the world.
One of the top questions international students are asked is, “Are you hoping to stay here in the U.S. or are you planning to return to your home country?”
A student recently answered that they had hoped to return home to rebuild their country, but now realize that if the current regime doesn’t change, then they would prefer to stay here in the U.S. because they won’t be able to effect any positive changes under the current government.
When a student from another country asked the first student what they didn’t like about the group in power, the first student’s response was,
Does anyone like a dictator? They tend to not be very nice people.
That got a good laugh from everyone. And the conversation moved on to other topics.
That got me thinking about a conversation I recently had with my son. And a conversation I have had myself with God.
The main question my son and I were wrestling with is, “God, why do you create people who can choose against you and go to hell? Why don’t you just create us to automatically love and serve you?”
Maybe the answer to this question is the same:
Does anyone like a dictator?
