While doing some Bible study this morning, I decided to pick up a Bible handbook I have had for years, and found a section on notable quotes about the Bible from famous Americans. One of my favorites is:
“If there is anything in my thoughts or style to commend, the credit is due to my parents for instilling in me an early love of the Scriptures. If we abide by the principles taught in the Bible, our country will go on prospering and to prosper; but if we and our posterity neglect its instructions and authority, no man can tell how sudden a catastrophe may overwhelm us and bury all our glory in profound obscurity.” Daniel Webster
This pretty much sums up my view of the situation.
I really don’t want to be caught up in a sudden catastrophe that destroys our nation. So to be purely selfish, could we all just please try to follow the instructions given 2000+ years ago?
Fascinatingly enough, someone even more famous than Webster, who was generally politically opposed to Webster, had this to say about the Bible:
“That book, sir, is the rock on which our republic rests.” Andrew Jackson
So let’s not worry about whether we are Democrats, Republicans or Independents (or whatever other flavor out there), let’s strive for love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness and self-control, for against such thing there is no law (Galatians 5:22-23).
